Welcome to the Alumni Newsletter

August/September 2012

We are making this a bumper issue combining the months of August and September, with all that has been happening around the globe and with our alumni over the past two months.

Britain's Olympic flame has now finally gone out (with quite a bang!), as it was passed onto Brazil. There is certainly a feel-good factor in the country after such successful Olympics and Paralympics championships, and two of our alumni share their personal experiences of their involvement in the events.

As we turn our thoughts to autumn with its back to school tradition, we are delighted to publish some great Mountbatten Institute MBA Graduation photos and accounts. Congratulations to all of those mentioned, on your achievements.

On a more sombre note, we have just seen another 11th September go by, and would like to take this opportunity to spare our thoughts for those who were, and have been affected by such a catastrophic event.

Thank you for all of your contributions to the newsletter, and don't forget to send us your career updates and jobs to advertise, etc. Also, as the programme continues to expand, we are always on the look out for new sponsor companies (or to resurrect former sponsor companies), so please contact us if you think your company may be interested.


Graduation Ceremony


Amanda Boyd, Alice Jones and Cecilia Cran (September 2010 - New York), three members of the Mountbatten MBA class to graduate from St Mary's University College, London, recently celebrating their fantastic successes.

In Alice's words: "It was a great morning and was a wonderful way to celebrate our achievements over the last 2 years - both academically and personally. I felt very privileged to take part in the ceremony."

Alice Jones has now settled back to life in the UK, working as an HR Consultant for LEGO - a fast-paced role, challenging and fun with opportunities to spend a little bit of her time everyday playing with LEGO!

Olympic Alumni


Gary Baker (September 2008 - New York)

We are sure there are many Olympics stories to tell, but we picked two very personal first hand experiences to share with our alumni.

Gary Baker (September 2008 - New York) volunteered for the London 2012 Olympics and shared the following with us:
"Whilst having lunch in the canteen, Serena Williams wandered in at one point and later on the LA Lakers basketball player Pau Gasol. Nobody even really batted an eyelid, but to me, I couldn't believe it!"
"A lot of people would probably say that it is madness to give up 15 days of your annual leave to volunteer for three weeks but that is exactly what I did this summer at the Olympics... it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of something special, and, after nearly 2 year application and training process, the Games lived up to all my expectations and more!" Alumni Survey

A big thank you to those who have kindly taken the time to fill in our Alumni Survey. We've been truly delighted with the completion rate, but there is a chance for those who still wish to participate. This really helps us with programme marketing and generally enables us to see in black and white what an elite group of young people MI alumni are.

Conor Chapple (January 2006 - New York) shared with us his special Olympics experience:
"I shall always remember London 2012 being purely dominated by the US Tennis team as they stayed at the Hotel where I work due to its proximity to Wimbledon. I met Andy Roddick, his beautiful actress wife Brooklyn Decker, John Isner and, Venus and Serena Williams plus a host of others. But the highlight for me was when I was congratulating Venus Williams on her win, she took off one of her Gold medals and let me hold it in my hand. The US Tennis team were so taken with the experience they left me a goodie bag filled with items of kit they had left over!"

Your Career

In a previous newsletter, Mark Edward Rasmussen (May 2008 - New York) told us about his recently set-up Russian Hosts business, and has given us this career update: "I've had a good response from the alumni members and have now got a good network of hosts in London. Recently, I've been focusing on setting up the infrastructure in the UK, which has been rather challenging as I'm currently based in Siberia. Thankfully everything now seems to be in place, and I'm going to begin a concerted marketing campaign in the progressing to other platforms as the business grows. I'd like to expand the business into other UK cities. I've had enquiries from clients wishing to stay in Manchester and Edinburgh as well, so if there are people who would like to host in other cities I'd be delighted to hear from them. I'm still looking for friendly, sociable and communicative hosts in London as well, so I'd love to discuss this further with anyone who fancies taking park and earning some extra cash."

Alumni Committee Updates & Announcement

The Alumni Committee has seen a few changes recently, and although we are sorry to lose a member, we are also happy to welcome a new face. Gareth Taylor (September 2008 - New York) has recently accepted a new job, and has decided that with all the commitment that involves, he will have to give up his position on the Committee. Gareth has been extremely helpful and willing member of the team, with plenty of good ideas, and we shall miss him. We wish Gareth every success in his new role.

We would also like to welcome to the Committee, Jeremy Kasriel (September 2002 - New York), who is pretty adept at organising his own alumni reunions, and we look forward to enlisting his help at our future events.
